New Delhi, February 22 Five persons, including a nine-year-old girl, committed suicide in the Capital over the last 24 hours, police said.

A nine-year-old girl was found hanging from the ceiling in Navada village, Uttam Nagar, last evening. According to police, Kajal’s body was found by her father, Jitender Kumar, when he returned home from work at 7 pm.

Both Jitender and his wife work in a factory in Naraina, police said.

Jitender told police that Kajol studied in the third standard at Indraprastha School in Navada. Though the police say it could be a case of suicide, they are not ruling out that Kajal could have been murdered.

“A nine-year-old cannot commit suicide. Why would she do it? The body has been sent for postmortem at DDU Hospital,” said a senior police officer. Neighbours reportedly told police that nobody visited the house on Thursday.

In another incident, a 35-year-old man hanged himself in Shahdara, east Delhi, this afternoon, police said. No suicide note has been found but deceased Shashank Sharma’s family members told police that he was in depression over the last year.

Police said Shahank’s elder brother, Rajesh, reportedly hanged himself eight years back after sustaining losses in business while his mother had also committed suicide 10 years back. Shashank, who ran a cosmetics shop, got married three times, police said.

A CRPF Jawan, meanwhile, was found dead this morning, reportedly after he consumed poison in Kanjhawla, Outer Delhi. Hardeep Singh (22) was found unconscious at his Nizampur village residence and taken to a local nursing home where he was declared brought dead. Doctors told the police that Hardeep, who was posted in Chandigarh, had consumed poison. He did not leave any suicide note but was reportedly in depression, police said.

A 23-year-old woman hanged herself at her house in Nangli Jali Mohalla in Janakpuri this morning, police said.

Deceased Renu’s husband works at a petrol station and the couple had been married for over two years. Renu’s family in Dwarka has alleged her in-laws killed her for “inadequate” dowry. An SDM inquiry has been ordered.

A trader reportedly hanged himself at his house in Model Town this morning. Police said Duli Chand Sethia (38) reportedly sustained losses in his business, which he ran from Khari Baoli. He is survived by his wife and three children.
