Ahmedabad Five swine flu related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours from Surat, even as three suspected cases later turned out to be positive and are at present undergoing treatment at the New Civil Hospital. As many as 57 patients here have been confirmed positive for swine flu after lab analysis.

Two deaths were reported from the Surat Municipal Corporation-run SMIMER Hospital on Thursday. The deceased have been identified as Sujit Tiwari (25), a resident of Umiyanagar in Nawagam Dindoli, and Kavita Girase (25), a resident of Laxminagar in Punagam. Today morning Tiwari’s infant son Aditya (3 months) died at the hospital. He was earlier admitted to the hospital after he showed symptoms of swine flu.

Sources said Tiwari, who originally belonging to Uttar Pradesh, worked in a textile factory in Pandesara. He had undergone primary treatment at a private clinic near his house and later got himself admitted in SMIMER Hospital.

Besides, two deaths were further reported from SMIMER Hospital today morning. The deceased have been identified as Bhagyashree Gaekwad (4 months), a resident of Laxminarayan Nagar, and Kanta Gajera (54), a resident Hariom Society. Health official from the district and the Surat Municipal Corporation have now started an awareness drive in the Nawagam Dindoli area in Limbayat.

District Health Department sources said three more suspected swine flu patients were admitted in the New Civil Hospital on Friday, adding that around 10 patients are undergoing treatment at the NCH, nine in SMIMER Hospital and five in Mahavir Hospital.

District Health Officer V R Gupta said: “We are carrying out a drive across the city to spread awareness about the symptoms of swine flu. In majority of the deaths, the patients came to the hospital after they had reached the acute stage. They first take treatment from private clinics and then get referred to a private hospital and finally come to SMIMER or NCH. We are now educating the people on how to take precautions and what all they should do when they come across symptoms.”
