Chandigarh There was no respite from fog on the first day of the year. Passengers were again at the receiving end with three flights of different airlines being cancelled and several delayed, and trains running hours behind schedule.

The Unchahar Express (4217), which runs from Allahabad to Chandigarh, was running 12 hours late and had not arrived till the filing of this report. The Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi Express (2011) was late too. Sadbhavana Express (2231), which runs from Lucknow to Chandigarh, arrived two hours behind schedule, while Paschim Express (2925) from Bandra was four hours late.

The railway authorities announced that the Sadbhavana Express (2232) would start from Chandigarh at 2 am instead of its scheduled departure time of 8.50 pm.

Air passengers too bore the brunt of bad weather. The Chandigarh-Delhi Kingfisher Airlines flight that was scheduled to take off at 2.25 pm was cancelled. Two more flights — Chandigarh-Goa MDLR Airlines and Chandigarh-Delhi Jet Airways — were cancelled due to fog. While some passengers were refunded the ticket amount, the others were accommodated in other flights.

The MDLR Airlines flight from Kullu to Chandigarh did not arrive on Thursday.

Passengers had to wait at the airport for long hours as several flights were delayed. The Kingfisher flight from Chandigarh to Mumbai was delayed by four and a half hours and departed at 2.30 pm. The MDLR flight to Delhi was late by three hours, Jet Airways flight to Mumbai by two hours, and the Air India Chandigarh-Delhi-Mumbai flight took off two and a half hours late. The Delhi and Mumbai-bound Jet Airways flights were also delayed by one hour each.

The officials of the meteorological department predicted such conditions were likely to continue in the coming days.

Schools to reopen on Jan 6

Keeping in view the harsh winter and fog conditions, the UT Education department has instructed both private and government schools to re-open on January 6. Earlier, the schools were to open on January 2 after the winter break. The primary and pre-primary wings of the schools will reopen on January 12. Due to the cold weather, the department has also changed the school hours from January 6 to 31. Schools operating in single shift will start at 8.30 am and close at 2 pm. The morning shifts in schools holding classes in double shifts will start at 8 am and end at 1.30 pm, while the day shift will start at 11.30 am and end at 5 pm .
