Ludhiana In a rare initiative, Municipal Corporation Commissioner G S Ghuman was out on the streets again to “follow up” Thursday’s anti-encroachment drive. The commissioner returned to the Sarabha Nagar market on Friday evening to see whether any illegal stalls had come up. Predictably, several stalls were up and running once again but as news of the MC team’s arrival spread, the offenders hastily shut shop and bolted. A similar scene was witnessed at Pakhowal Road.

Meanwhile, fresh anti-encroachment drives were carried out at Gill Road, Model Town Extension and Model Town Market.

The MC team, along with the district police, removed the scooter market at Gill Road. The MC staff had faced frequent opposition from the traders here. But Ghuman had an answer ready: “Earlier, the persons running the scooter market used to gherao our team, but today we gheraoed them.”

The MC team cleared kiosks from the Rarewala Market and hutments near Leisure Valley were demolished. Area councillor Amrit Varsha Rampal had complained about the hutments about six months ago.

Top-secret drive
Municipal Corporation Commissioner G S Ghuman kept Friday’s drive a secret with not even the civic teams being told about the plan till the last minute. In addition, the next destination was also decided off-hand while on the way. “This was done to see the situation prevailing in the markets. I know that, at times, even the MC staff alerts encroachers about our drives,” said Ghuman.
