"One of the reasons I joined Indian Cricket League was my association with a country such as India. Damien Martyn is already here and soon Michael Kasprowicz will also be seen in action. I have always loved playing in India and I have fond memories of this country," says Gillespie who has a reputation of one of the more approachable, direct players in the upper echelons of the modern game. And as the conversation moves on further, he agrees archly to talk about more. Well, Gillespie could have played only 52 Tests instead of a possible 92 Tests for Australia.
He could have climbed to be the most successful bowler for Australia since he made his debut in 1996, and not fallen places due to a string of injuries through out his career until that final flourish. But he rails at any negative talk. "Injuries are a part of any fast bowler's life. I guess I had my share of luck too. But it was an honour to play for Australia and along with the likes of Steve Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting and I guess I did a pretty job despite the injuries. It was always been important for me to end my career on my own terms, while I was still contributing. I did not want to get tapped on the shoulder and shown the door," he says with a cheek of a hipster, with a mullet, who happens to be the first aboriginal cricketer to play for Australia. And the depth of his conviction about ICL means that Gillespie is prepared to forsake his career in the Australian domestic circuit. "It is very unfortunate that Cricket Australia has banned all the players who participate in the Indian Cricket League. I guess I will not be able to play in the English county season this season," says Gillespie.
Some time during the next few days perhaps before he settles down to play the chin music again, Gillespie might pause and ask himself: could life be better at IPL? Perhaps no, as he believes ICL is already established. "Indian Cricket League is already established one whereas IPL is yet to start. Yet, we players have no hard feelings for IPL. Our first task is to perform well for our respective teams and I am looking towards playing a stellar role for my team," says he with a pause in his voice. And what about India's fine performance during the recent tour of Australia? "I don't know much about the controversies but I think that India did well on the tour. If Australia had an upper hand during the Test matches, it was India who dominated in the tri-series. The Indian team has got a lot of potential in terms of youth. Am I right?" says Gillespie quizzically.
