…a city mall gets “art-friendly”, with the launch of a gallery in its premises

Shopping malls of the city are coming of age it seems. While they are the best place for what Carrie from Sex and the City would call “retail therapy”, they are slowly but surely turning to be cultural destinations. South City mall is a case in point where a gallery was launched by Emami Chisel Art.

The gallery, called Art Walk, is meant to “introduce art to the common people”. Moreover, the fact that most works to be displayed here are affordable art pieces makes the gallery “public-friendly”. “The paintings are not very highly priced, which will attract many buyers,” said art historian, Pranab Ray at the launch of the gallery this Monday.

The gallery will promote talented, unknown artists. “We will promote the works of deserving artists who have not gained much exposure. We hope that this gallery proves to be a launching pad for them,”said Richa Agarwal, director, Emami Chisel Art.

Paintings of many promising artists were part of the gallery launch, but it were the works of eminent artists such as Suvaprasanna, Jogen Chowdhury and Paritosh Sen that were attracting visitors.

“Nowadays, galleries have ended up being posh places where people from only a certain section of the society walk in. Which is why, endeavours such as these are always welcome as they go a long way in promoting art,” said painter Jogen Chowdhury.
