Rajkot Following a uproar, sale of palmoline in the name of refined edible oil, the Food department of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation has swung into action.

The issue was raised by the Saurashtra Oil Millers Association (SOMA). A Food department team raided Gowardhan Trading Company and Prabhudas Jamnadas Trading Company at Rajkot Marketing Yard on Thursday and took samples of edible oil from there.

Tins of these companies have been out in the market with labels of refined edible oil. It, however, does not specify whether it is palmoline, cottonseed or groundnut oil.

“Samples have been collected from these two companies and sent for a laboratory test,” said an RMC official, adding that the department would intensify its drive in coming days.

While a tin of 15 kg palmoline should, according to prevailing market rates, be available between Rs 550 and 600, the one being sold under the name of ‘refined edible oil’ is priced at over Rs 700, at par with cottonseed oil. Groundnut oil, at present, is available at Rs 1,050 for 15 kg.

SOMA has taken a serious note of the matter and will decide its future action at its executive committee meeting scheduled for Saturday.
