Kolkata, December 31 For Churchill Brothers, everytime you ask the club’s top brass, including its president Churchill Alemao, about the team’s successful run in the ongoing I-League, and they will keep telling you how big a factor their Moroccan coach Karim Bencherifa has been for the team.

Chruchill Bothers are currently in the third position in the I-League with 13 points from 7 matches so far, trailing leaders Dempo SC and second-best JCT Mills.

Ask Bencherifa himself about the team’s success story, and he will instantly pass on the credit to each and every person involved with the club’s football affairs.

Asked about the reason behind the team’s consistent showing, the coach told The Indian Express recently: “Everybody associated with the club is maintaining consistency and that is being reflected in the boys’ performance out there on the field. The club officials have maintained an excellent atmosphere for the players to do their job. The players have absolutely nothing to complain about when it comes to requirements. My support-staff has provided excellent co-operation. And each player in the team is completely focused on the ongoing I-League, focused towards each and every match.”

The coach reckons that the collective strength of the players is the main reason behind the team’s consistent showing in the national league. “Here in Churchill Brothers, none of the players face any kind of discrimination. For example, our key midfielders Favio Tavel and Chitra Sen are doubtful for the team’s next I-League tie against Salgaocar, to be played on December 31. Key central defender Gourmangi may also not be available for the match due to injury. But these setbacks will not affect our performance in that match, as their substitutes, who are expected to play, will get equal importance throughout the season and will deliver likewise,” Bencherifa said.

The coach continued: “So, I wont be surprised if the substitutes come up with their best when given the chance. Of course, it’s true that we don’t have many real match-winners in the team, except for Nigerian striker Okolie Odafa. But still, I am quite happy with the collective performance of the boys so far.”

Asked about his opinions on the way the I-League is shaping for the other big teams in the race for the title, and Bencherifa pointed out towards Dempo SC and JCT Mills. He said: “Dempo are looking best, considering the way they have been performing in the I-League so far. But it is not unexpected, isn’t it? They have got high-quality foreign players along with experienced and top-class domestic players like Mahesh Gawli and Climax Lawrence. I am also equally impressed with JCT Mills’ showing in the league. In fact, the Punjab side should be given more credit since they don’t have very many match-winners in the team, just like us. Their success is also dependent largely on the team’s collective strength and that is a good sign.”
