New Delhi The government has decided to assign an internationally recognisable symbol to the Indian rupee, much like the US dollar, Euro, Pound Sterling, Japanese Yen, and some other major currencies. And has invited the public to suggest symbols for the rupee.

The symbol, the Finance Ministry has announced, “should represent the historical and cultural ethos of the country as widely accepted across the country”. It should be applicable to “standard keyboard” and has to be in the Indian National Language Script or a visual representation, it says.

All valid entries received by the deadline of April 15 will be evaluated by a jury of three members drawn from reputed art institutions and two representatives each from the government and Reserve Bank of India. Five entries will be shortlisted at which stage participants will be asked to make presentations to the jury. The winner will get a cash prize of Rs 250,000 while the shortlisted five participants will get Rs 25,000 each. The selected design will become a property of the government of India.

query regarding design of rupee symbol. by Ankur on 05 Mar 2009

what do you mean by the "applicable to standard key board"? do you mean that the symbol should be selected from the symbol depicted on the standard key board only, or if my symbol sign is not in the key board is not valid? can we design a seperate symbol which is not available on the standard ky board. please specify. with regards. thanks.

reply to ur question by ruchita on 02 Apr 2009

"applicable to standard key board".this means d symbol which will be selected for the Indian currency will be included in the standard key board (which u r using rite now) just as u find the symbol of dollar n pound u ll find the symbol of rupees in the keyboard too.....

Rupee symbol. by abyjos on 05 Mar 2009

Where does the question of "design" comes here? It is expected to be available in "Standard keyboard". All characters in that already have exclusive meaning. As someone has quoted already, Om and * are closer to our ethos which can be used. May be Swastik too is possible. Apart from that is there any scope to have different design?

Indian Rupee Symbol by naga srinivasulu on 03 Mar 2009

I think * should be better symbol for Indian Rupee. One reason is * replicates asoka chakra in the national flag. Other reason is it is a symbol of rising sun.
