Ludhiana The students of Shree Atam Vallabh Jain College (SAVJC) celebrated International Women’s Day with a difference on Sunday. Acknowledging their social responsibility towards Mother Nature, they carried out a tree plantation drive on a one-kilometre stretch on the G T Road.

Over hundred saplings of various trees were planted as part of the drive. Also, nearly 100 students joined hands to form a human chain to convey the message of protecting the environment on the occasion. The students also carried banners with messages such as ‘Save girls, save trees’ and ‘Women are the real architects of society’ among others.

Avitash Jain, wife of Kashmiri Lal Jain, an industrialist from the city as well as the president of the college, was the chief guest of the occasion. She appreciated the efforts of the students in their attempt to convey the message of integrating the dignity of womanhood with the symbolic representation of a tree.

A slide show and posters of successful women from different walks of life were also displayed to endorse the message. Profiles of successful women from the industry, art, science and technology and sports were showcased during a presentation series.

Various renowned city residents as well as people from Hussainpura village joined the students to make their contribution in the tree plantation drive. Principal of the college, Dr Anuradha, congratulated the students for their unique endeavour and also presented a vote of thanks.
