New Delhi, January 1 The Gandhi family’s association with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital was strengthened further, with UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, 61, admitted there early Tuesday morning following complaints of breathing problems. While most VVIPs prefer either the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) or the Army Research and Referral Hospital (R&R), the Gandhi family is linked with Sir Ganga Ram Hospital due largely to family gynaecologist Dr S K Bhandari, who now heads the gynaecology department at Gang Ram.

Dr Bhandari had delivered both Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi. A graduate from Lady Harding Medical College, Dr Bhandari had worked in Holy Family and Tirath Ram hospitals before joining Ganga Ram. She is known to be a close friend of the family.

“She has been the gynaecologist of both Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka,” a doctor from the hospital, who did not want to be named, said. “She (Dr Bhandari) has always assisted them in need. Varun Gandhi was born in AIIMS, but Sonia came to Ganga Ram (for her children’s delivery).”

Dr Bhandari also delivered Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s children at the same hospital.

“The privacy they get here is what they appreciate. That is why they come here,” Ajoy Sehgal, spokesperson at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said. B K Rao, chairman of the hospital’s Board of Directors, said the family’s association with the hospital is “due to care we take of the patients”.

Set up by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1954, the hospital now caters to 40 different specialties.
