Kolkata The West Midnapore district administration today shifted security forces from only a single school in Lalgarh, though Advocate General Bolai Roy had assured the Calcutta High Court that it would vacate at least two schools by December 2.

One company of forces was shifted from Gohamidanga High School, which had been occupied since July 1.

After hearing a Public Interest Litigation on November 24, the Calcutta High Court had directed the state government to vacate all the schools where police camps had been set up to accommodate the Central-state joint forces.

According to Roy, state government had occupied 22 educational institutions between June to September at Binpur, Lalgarh, Salboni and Goaltore blocks in different phases to accommodate 4,100 personnel of the Central-state joint forces to carry out police operation against Maoists outfits.

IEDs found in Malbandh village
Two IEDs have been recovered from Malbandh village in Dherua near Lalgarh in West Midnapore district.

The mines were planted to launch a terror attack in the area on the third day of the five-day bandh called by the People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA).

According to a senior CID official, Maoists, along with PCAPA activists, have plans to launch a terror attack this week. “We have information they are stockpiling arms in the Jungle Mahal area. Last night, Maoists tried to enter West Midnapore from the bordering area of Jharkhand with two vehicles, which were full of arms. After receiving a tip-off, we sealed the Jharkhand-Bengal border and deployed police at the border for frisking,” the official said. At 11 am the joint forces received information that two IEDs have been planted in the area and they rushed to the spot to defuse the mines, said a senior district official. As the joint forces defused the IEDs, Maoists opened fire from the forest. The forces retaliated and entered the forest. The firing was still on.
