Pune The Rotary Club of Pune North East’s Indian International Model United Nations (RIIMUN) recently organised by Velocity Media, was a grand success with more than 450 delegates participating from India and across the border.

Over 50 reputed institutions from all academic streams participated in this mega event making it India’s largest Model UN, stated a press release.

Kuldeep Jandial, founder and district chairman, RIIMUN, said “It’s heartening to see our little dream take shape. In the last 10 years we have churned out more than 2000 MUNners. In this 11th edition, we had more than 200 participants from institutions across India. We plan to make this event as a part of Pune’s social calendar.”

Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalisation and multilateral diplomacy. In Model UN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organisation. Project director Harsh Nangia, who has been organising this event for the last six years, says, “We wish to create awareness on global issues and encourage the youth to participate in this forum in a bid to create world leaders.”

RIIMUN, in its 11th year, focused on varied issues from Sexual Violence in Conflict to Future of the NPT, Child Labour, Nuclear Energy and Terrorism to name a few. The delegates’ incredible effort in researching their country positions ensured that a high quality debating standard was achieved while drafting some exceptionally good resolutions. The team from Symbiosis Law School representing USA won the Best Team award and a cash prize of Rs.10,000. The team representing Columbia were the runners-up while the team representing Russia walked away with the Best Costume award. Talking about the Russian team’s costume Secretary General Lenold Vaz said “Each member put in a lot of effort to resemble a Russian leader, with some of them going to the extent of even shaving their heads.”

The RIIMUN 2009 International Conference was held at Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies (UG), Viman Nagar from January 20 to February 1. Apart from the heated discussions inside each committee the delegates also enjoyed a Rock Concert with two Pune bands, ‘The Trip’ and ‘Minus One’ performing their original tracks. Talking about his RIIMUN experience, veteran Ankeet Shah said “This year the debating level reached a crescendo and the International nature of event added a completely new dimension. The organizers managed it extremely well and their efforts are much appreciated by one and all.”
