The tiger was reportedly shot at in the Bihara sector of the Kumarganj forest range. Earlier also the authorities had shot at the tiger.
Jamuna Prasad, a local associate of the combing team led by Nawab Shafaat Ali Khan, said: “The tiger attacked the team and Khan fired thrice with his heavy bore rifle. The tiger was injured. But the three elephants used by the team to move through the forest panicked and broke loose.”
After some time, when the elephants were calmed, the team had strayed away far away from the spot. The team will go into the forest again on Wednesday morning.
Senior Forest Officer A N Singh, who was with the combing team, claimed that the maneater has received several injuries, including those inflicted by the bullets of bore rifle.
“We will comb the 10-km radius around the place of the incident in the jungle. The tiger may be hiding in the thick bushes. Today we failed to get him but tomorrow we are hopeful of finding him, dead or alive,” said Singh.
After straying out of Pilibhit jungles in November, the tiger has travelled more than 400 kilometres to reach Faizabad. For the last two months, it had been roaming in and around the Rampur Janak reserve forest in Kumarganj range. It has killed five people — two in Pilibhit, one in Barabanki and two in Faizabad. Its last victim was a forest department guide Raghu Raj, whom it killed on January 15.
