Brahmbhatt had settled in the United States since 2002 after taking VRS from the bank. He had set up his own business, which was doing well. Brahmbhatt was planning to come back to Vadodara to lead a retired life after the completion of his daughters’ education. His last rites will now be performed in Roanoke by his family members settled in the US. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Janak Inamdar, Brahmbhatt's uncle and director of the department of continuing adult education, M S University (MSU), was the first to receive the news of the incident. “The call came early in the morning and we couldn’t believe it. It is not easy getting through to people there immediately,” he said. He revealed that Brahmbhatt’s wife, Kailash, who works at the store with him, was lucky as she had left the store an hour before the robbery.
According to Inamdar, some passers-by who noticed the shootout immediately alerted the police and rushed Brahmbhatt to the hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead. He died due to two gunshots wounds fired from point-blank range.
“We were told that he was probably shot because he refused to give the robbers any money. That was the kind of man he was,” Inamdar said. The only consolation was the arrest of the two culprits, he added.
