Mumbai Fifteen former employees of the Gourmet Italian Food Pvt Ltd Company, located in Chunabhatti, were arrested on Monday for trespassing into the premises and preventing the owner from entering. The company, which runs Amore, a prominent gelato parlour in the city, had reportedly sacked the 15 employees ten months ago for misbehaviour and malpractices.

According to officials from the Nehru Nagar police station, around 1:30 pm on Monday, the accused had barged into the company premises, holding banners and shouting slogans.

“According to the statement of Yasser Ali, one of the partners of the company, the management had removed the workers around 10-11 months back owing to several reasons like disobedience and theft. After their removal, the owners had received several threatening calls demanding that the workers be reinstated but the owners had overlooked them and did not register any complain with the police,” said police sub-inspector Sujata Warang, the investigating officer in the case.

“However, yesterday the workers, who now claimed to be a part of one Yuva Sarkar Sanghatna, illegally entered the premises, demanded that the company should ‘recruit Indian workers’ and alleged that ‘the company was exploiting Indians by not recruiting them’. They also prevented Ali from entering the company,” added Warang.

The police were summoned and they arrested one Rohan Narayan Naik (24), a Bandra resident who was leading the group, as well as six female and nine male ex-employees. A formal complaint was filed by Mallesh Natekar, who witnessed the incident and the accused were remanded to judicial custody till February 17. However, all of them were granted bail on a bond of Rs 30,000 on Tuesday.
