New Delhi Grappling with encroachment and a shrinking green cover in Delhi, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has directed the construction of seven feet-high walls around the Ridge area in Central Delhi and North Delhi on Friday.

Following a meeting with officials of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the environment department to take stock of impending threat on the “green lungs” of the city, the Chief Minister approved the design of stone masonry walls presented by officials from the NDMC.

The walls will be constructed between Ganga Ram Hospital and Talkatora Road along the Ridge area around Springdales School, Pusa Road.

While a part of the wall around the Central Ridge area has previously been built by the Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC) and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department (IFCD), the municipal council was asked to present designs for the walls as majority of the area is under the jurisdiction of the NDMC.

The CM, reportedly impressed with the designs, has asked the IFCD to construct the remaining part of the wall and has decided to replicate the design while extending the wall to the Ridge area around the North Campus. Dikshit would also be writing to the DDA for the same.

The government has already decided on mapping the Ridge area to ensure the green cover is properly identified and demarcated.
