Chandigarh Members of the Federation of Sectors' Welfare Association Chandigarh (FOSWAC) today held a meeting to discuss measures to ward off the challenges of garbage collection. Voicing the concerns of residents, Sunil Chopra, president, Sector Welfare Association, Sector 18 C, said the city residents, at present, are facing problems in the form of independent private contractors, who charge exorbitant rates and are accountable to no one.

He added that the Sehaj Safai Kendras' built by the MC for garbage collection are fast becoming an eyesore with splattered garbage, which is a breeding ground for flies, mosquitoes and a haven for anti-social elements. Dr Satnam Singh, former WHO programme director, said solid waste management is the responsibility of the Municipal Corporation, across the world.

P C Sanghi, chairman, FOSWAC, said they have decided to present a memorandum to the Administration demanding that the Municipal Corporation arrange for a door-to-door collection and segregation of garbage facility. The members said they would file a public interest litigation (PIL) if their concerns are not looked into.
