Surat Four people were killed and nine others severely injured after a drum washer exploded in Agrawal Dyeing and Printing Factory at Katargam on Friday.

The injured were rushed to the New Civil hospital where their condition is reported to be critical.

The dead have been identified as Rajendra Singh (50), Manoj Singh (25), Laxman Singh (22), and Chhotelal Dalji (23). They were all residents of Kasanagar area in Amroli and hailed from Uttar Pradesh.

They had been working in the factory for the last two years on contract basis.

According to Fire brigade officials, several labourers were working at the plant near Mehta petrol pump on Friday night.

Due to increase in pressure inside the drum washer, it exploded. Those who were near it sustained injuries. Soon after, the entire factory was vacated.

The Fire brigade rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation.

Sources said the intensity of the blast was so high that the wall at another section in the unit collapsed and a labourer was crushed to death.

The factory inspectors and forensic experts also rushed to the spot and started their investigations, while the injured were taken to the hospital.

Fire Officer D H Dodhia said: “We have found that there was a mechanical fault in the drum washer due to which the pressure inside increased and it exploded. The forensic experts collected some samples from the spot and are investigating to find out the reason behind the mishap.”
