Four dead as train hits three-wheeler

Rupnagar, February 16 Four people died and two others were injured when a train hit a three-wheeler at an unmanned railway crossing at village Alipur near Rupnagar on Saturday morning.

The accident occurred on the Rupnagar-Nangal rail track around 8.30 am. The passenger train was headed for Ambala from Churru via Nangal, Rupnagar and Chandigarh.

The three-wheeler (registration number PB12G-5940) was crossing the unmanned crossing at village Alipur.

Three occupants of the three-wheeler, including two women and a child, died on the spot while three others were injured. Later, one of the injured succumbed when he was being taken to PGIMER.

The dead have been identified as Baljit Kaur, 42, of village Suara in SAS Nagar, Karamjit Kaur, 50, Raman, 10, of Morinda and Nirmal Singh of village Rattangarh.

The injured have been identified as driver Sukhdeep Singh of Suara and Mehar Singh of Morinda.

All the passengers were related and were on their way to attend a marriage at village Alipur from village Ghanauli.

An injured Sukhdeep Singh, who was driving the three-wheeler, said the brakes of the three-wheeler failed while crossing the track.

Rupnagar Deputy Commissioner B Purushartha , SSP Praveen Kumar and senior railway officials from Ambala and Rupnagar, including ADRM RK Saxena and Divisional Safety Officer Narsingh reached the spot.

Railway police have registered a case against driver Sukhdeep Singh.
