The Vakola police have also arrested Ram Prakash Prabhu (30) the driver of the truck. “Ram Prakash Prabhu has been sent to judicial custody,” said an officer of the Vakola police station. Two other workers Amar Kumar Singh (21) and Muhammad Husen Jathubathia (40) were also injured in the accident. Singh and Jathubathia were admitted to Surbhi Life Care Hospital at Kandivli (east).

On Monday a 71- year-old woman, Shantabai Narayan Vyas, lost her life after being hit by a van while a passer-by, 58 year-old Ganpati Shenoy, is in coma. The Kanjurmarg police have arrested the driver of the van, Kevin Stephen Gomes (29) who claimed that he had turned the car in the wrong direction and ended up hitting the two. Vyas was sweeping the entrance leading to a temple at NJ Park in Kanjurmarg when she was hit. “The van hit her while she was sweeping the ground and she collapsed. While Vyas succumbed to her injuries, Shenoy is admitted at the Godrej Memorial Hospital,” said police sub-inspector Sambhaji Bhoite of the Kanjurmarg police station.  

Gomes has been booked for rash and negligent driving. “For the past 20 years her family has been visiting this temple and while it was her husband who usually did all the work, after his death a few years back, Vyas had taken over his responsibilities. Her elder son runs a fishing business and hence the younger son used to accompany his mother to the temple,” said a police official.

In another incident, a 12-year-old student Deepak Patwa died after being hit by a taxi while crossing the road. Deepak and a friend were crossing MK Road when a taxi, driven by one Ramakant Pradhan (37), hit him. Patwa received severe head injuries and was brought dead to the GT Hospital. LT Marg police have arrested Pradhan. “The boys were just crossing the road when Pradhan’s car came and hit Deepak. The injury was very severe and he died,” said an officer of LT Marg police station.
