Notices have been issued to 300 doctors in Ahmedabad city and 381 doctors in Surat city and the districts, in this regard. Searches in Vadodara and Rajkot are also on to track down the quacks.

Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner I P Gautam said that besides the AMC, three other agencies, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, Health Commissioner, and the Food and Drugs Control Administration will be involved in the task.

He said the AMC will raid the suspected places, seize the spurious material and have it cut into pieces.

Asked if the products still make their way to the recycling machines, he said this problem is to be handled by the three other agencies, especially the GPCB.

He said the raids on clinics using products made from recycled biomedical waste will carry on, as the practice is hazardous to human health.

So far, the AMC has conducted raids on 13 godowns of scrap dealers and sent the list to the city police crime branch for further action.

Municipal Medical Officer (Health) Dr S P Kulkarni said the department had filed one FIR against a doctor in Isanpur and issued notices to 300 medical practitioners, asking them to produce their registration certificate, certificate of medical waste disposal (issued by GPCB) and their degree certificate.

“The notices were issued a week ago and the compliance report is awaited,” he said.

Meanwhile, two cases of Hepatitis, one each from the Shah Alam and Sabarmati areas, have been reported and the patients have been kept under observation.
