Kolkata Four persons were arrested on Sunday for their alleged role in the murder of Mina Dutta (41), a widow who was found dead in her Jagachha residence on January 7.

The four accused have been identified as Swanti Nandi, Soma Das, Sanjay Das and Ranju Mallik.

SK Rai, officer-in-charge of the case in Jagachha, said that preliminary investigations hint at the involvement of the four in the murder. They will be produced before the Howrah CJM court on Monday.

Additional SP Sukesh Singh said money and an old quarrel could have been possible reasons for the murder. “There was probably some old problem between Soma and Meena which spilled out that night and led to the murder,” said Singh.

The police claimed that the two — Soma and Meena — could have been involved in flesh trade and that Soma possibly had a few photographs of Meena in compromising positions. Swati, Ranju and Soma were present at the crime spot, while Sanjay was arrested as he had all the information on the scheme of events, said police.

Dutta had been strangulated with the wires of a mobile charger and a pillow had been pressed against her face to prevent her from screaming, the police added. —ENS
