Mumbai The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Wednesday arrested five men allegedly involved in a robbery of gold and diamond ornaments worth over Rs 8 lakh. The robbery took place in October last year at Kandivli (East). The police have recovered the stolen property.

The arrested persons have been identified as Qayum Shaikh (28), Feroze Khan (26), Parashuram Chavan (26), Mohsin Khan (32) and Mohammed Arif Bangali (21). They have been remanded to police custody till February 10.

According to the police, on October 13, jewellery worth Rs 8,66,800 was robbed from one Pradeep Kamble, an employee of Ditrend Jewellery. He was carrying the jewellery in a bag and was on Akurli Road in Kandivli (East) when the incident occurred.

“Kamble was going to Aditi Leisure in Gundecha Industrial Estate on Akurli Road to get a Hallmark stamp on the jewellery. When he was looking for an autorickshaw someone hit him on the head with a cricket bat and ran with the bag. A case was registered at Samata Nagar police station. Acting on a tip off we arrested the culprits on Wednesday,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

None of the accused have any prior criminal record.

“Chavan worked at Ditrend Jewellers for a year and a half. He was sacked a year ago. He provided the other accused with information on the movement of the ornaments from the unit,” said Maria.
