New Delhi, January 8 A court on Tuesday ordered framing of charges against Basant Vallabh, a co-accused in the Meerut Hashimpura case, in which 42 muslims were killed 20 years ago, allegedly by Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) personnel.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) H S Sharma, ordered framing of charges against Vallabh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 363 (kidnapping) and 307 (attempt to murder).

The court also asked the prosecution to intimate it about those witnesses who had either expired or were untraceable within a week. It directed the prosecution to summon at least two witnesses every day during the hearing of the case.

Vallabh, a former PAC personnel, was allegedly instrumental in hatching a criminal conspiracy with his colleagues. The 1987 massacre trial is now at the stage of recording of prosecution evidence. The prosecution has alleged that on May 22, 1987, PAC took 42 Muslims from Mohalla Hashimpura in Meerut into custody, transported them by trucks to Upper Ganga Canal, shot them to death and dumped their bodies in the nearby waters.
