Dr Kang provided an overview of Punjab agriculture highlighting agricultural issues and research agenda of PAU. The group evinced keen interest in the ecological constraints, especially depleting water table, post-harvest losses and residue management.
Petriat said that the team comprised practicing farmers who are growing wheat, oil-seeds, sunflower, barley and maize. They evinced keen interest in the PAU programme on these crops. Petriat wished to collaborate on processing of onion and other vegetables with PAU.
Dr Kang assured the group of all possible help in this direction. Pierre wanted to know about the job opportunities that PAU students have after completing their programmes. The team had earlier visited New Delhi, Jaipur, Agra and were deeply interested to visit PAU about which they had heard a lot.
The tour leader, Christelle said that the group is organizing farmers’ trip to various countries every two years and said that they were overwhelmed to see the elaborate research and experimental programmes at PAU. The group was shown around the displays of farm machinery developed by PAU, Museum of Social History of Punjab, Museum of Water Resources of Northern India, Crop Museum, etc. They appreciated the Punjabi culture and heritage show-cased in the Museum of Social History of Punjab that they termed as immensely educating. The group also saw the PAU campus and the experimental fields. The visitors were taken around to the rural games in village Jarkhad and to the farms of Progressive growers to have interaction with them.
