The purpose of their visit is to apprise themselves about Punjab agriculture, especially the pre-dominance and effects of rice-wheat cropping system, said Dr Daljit Singh Dhillon, head, Department of Extension Education, who led the group to the centre for Communication of the University.
The students, during their interaction with the faculty members of the centre, said that eight of them were interested to study the ecological and economic aspects of wheat while the remaining six of rice. The students evinced keen interest in the activities of the centre and said that they held state’s agriculture in high esteem.
Dr (Mrs) Ravinder Kaur Dhaliwal and Manmeet Kaur, who accompanied the group as coordinators, said that the student visitors were being provided interaction with progressive growers, heads of cooperative societies, traders, village representatives and scientists and administrators of the university. The students were taken around the museum of rural life of Punjab, where they were apprised about richness of Punjabi culture and way of life. The students met Dr. Tejwant Singh, Dean, Postgraduate Studies, who explained them about the PAU. Earlier, the group also held discussions with bee-keepers, undergoing training at Kairon Kisan Ghar of the University.
Dr Jagtar Singh Dhiman, additional director of communication, provided them information about the activities of centre for communication and highlighted the role of print and electronic media in the effective dissemination of scientific technologies to the ultimate clientele — the farmers. The students were provided hand-outs having information about PAU.
Students made queries about the role of radio and television and the university publications in transfer of technology that the faculty members attended to. Two students of PAU — Jaspreet and Jackwinder — with proficiency in French interacted with the group and acted as interpreters.
