Kolkata N Tomba, the military chief of Manipur-based outlawed Kanglei Yawol Kanba Lup (KYKL), had settled in Kurseong in 2007 and was living in a house purchased in the name of his Nepali associate’s wife, police said on Wednesday.

Tomba, who was arrested from Matigara in Darjeeling district on Sunday along with his three women commanders, used to make extortion calls to businessmen in Manipur through a satellite phone. His recruits in Imphal used to collect the money for him, said police.

A CID team from Kolkata interrogated Tomba on Wednesday. “Our team is present in Darjeeling. We are taking up the case soon,” said Neeraj Pandey, IG, CID, West Bengal. During a raid at Tomba’s Kurseong residence, the police recovered a Malayasian cellphone and three SIMs of Nepal.

Tomba used to be surrounded by young women, said police. The two Manipuri women — S Nemcha and N Rama Chamu — arrested used to accompany him to all foreign trips and are trained in using arms.

The third, 20-year-old Saraswati Rai used to make all necessary arrangements for Tomba and provided him with all kinds of local assistance. Rai is a final year student of Bachelor in Business Administration (BBA) from a Siliguri college. “Both Nemcha (18) and Chamu (23), who hail from Manipur, are college dropouts,” said Radheshyam Singh, SP of East Imphal. “They were his closest female companions,” said D P Singh, SP, Darjeeling.
