Ahmedabad Vishal Naik began his career as a recovery agent. He had committed a murder in 2002 and has been in jail since his arrest in 2004. He is now known to be one of the most dreaded inmates, running an extortion racket from behind the bars.

It took Naik five years inside the jail and his friendship with Gova Rabbari, another murder convict and criminal, to turn into a full-fledged extortionist.

Naik is also a key accused in the infamous Chetan Battery alias Chetan Patel murder case in the Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad in August 2005.

A gang leader, Battery, was stabbed to death allegedly by Naik and some others as a fallout of a gang war. Rabbari, who was also in the Sabarmati Central Jail and was the leader of a rival gang, is believed to have masterminded the killing. Naik, Rabbari and the other accused were transferred to the Vadodara Central Jail after this incident. Gujarat ATS Chief Ajay Tomar, who had arrested Naik in 2004 during his tenure as DCP Zone 1 in Ahmedabad, said: “Naik had fled after killing a person in Naranpura in 2002. We arrested him two years later following a tip-off. Next time I heard his name again was in 2005, when Naik along with some others, stabbed Chetan Battery to death.
