Roychaudhuri said colleges across the state don’t offer commerce at post-graduate level which can lead to a shortage of teachers in schools where commerce is taught. “There are only three colleges in the state where commerce is taught at post-graduate level. They are Goenka College of Commerce and Business Administration, Hooghly Mohsin College and Balurghat College of Commerce,” the minister said.
Speaking at a programme for upgradation of the syllabus of commerce education of the University of Calcutta on Tuesday, the minister called for representation of members of industry in the board of studies for commerce education in the University of Calcutta both at undergraduate and post-graduate level — a suggestion endorsed by the representatives of the university too who were present there. Meanwhile, the University of Calcutta has decided to start an industrial internship programme for students of commerce (honours) along with the project works in a number of papers of the stream. D R Dandapat, Chairman of Board of Studies of Commerce, also proposed setting up a finishing school where commerce students could brush up their skills before entering the industry.
