Pune From a submarine shaped like a shark to a moon traveller, when little ones unleashed their creativity to try their hand at designing automobiles it was a combination of fantasy and science at the Honeywell-SAE Student Automotive Design Challenge.Students pretended to be top-notch automotive engineers as they researched, designed, tested and built electric gear-driven toy cars as newly appointed employees of a mock engineering corporation. The day’s concepts included a firefighting rescue vehicle named ‘Hydro Power’, a crime fighting bullet-proof Scooby Doo-themed cruiser, a shark-shaped underwater submarine inspired by Disney's ‘Finding Nemo’ and a cleaning van in the image of the cartoon character Jerry. “I enjoyed the experience a lot, making the model, learning different technical terms”, said Aakash, a participant from DAV Public School.

This year, Green Earthlings, a group of five students from DAV Public School, Aundh won the competition. Green Earthlings made an eco-friendly model ‘GO GREEN’. About 45 students participated in the competition this year from Pune. The winning model will now enter the global contest along with entries from schools across different countries. Honeywell employees from across the world will vote on the winning vehicle and the winners will be announced in December. This unique program, launched as a pilot last year is designed to engage students in the age group of 11-14. This year the program has included schools from eight countries and has reached out to more than 400 students. DAV principal Jayshree Venkatram said, “This is one of the biggest events in this field and it is surprising to see such small children deal with fairly complex scientific stuff.”

Apurv Choubey, director HR, Honeywell Turbo Pvt. Ltd. said, "This is the second time we have held this competition. We focused on regions where the contest would have the most impact, as well as regions where students had demonstrated favorable aptitudes. Our goal is to ensure that these fields receive significant interest and promote an interest in school children to opt for engineering as their career choice,” he added. The performance standards for each vehicle include its ability to travel over a 3-metre course on its own power over a duration of 3 seconds, the ability to climb a 30-degree incline for at least 1 metre, and the ability to climb a 15-second incline of 1metre in 2 seconds or less. In addition to these performance benchmarks, the models are constructed using eco-friendly recyclable materials and will be graded on the basis of a ‘green score’, indicating the overall eco-friendliness of the construction.
