Kolkata Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today ruled out the creation of a Gorkhaland that would involve a bifurcation of the state.

Addressing a public meeting in Siliguri, the chief minister called upon the Gorkha leadership to shun violence and settle for more administrative powers for the Gorkha Hill Council and more finances. A separate state is not possible, he said.

The chief minister said even additional administrative powers and more funding would have to be accepted in relation to the existing three hill sub-divisions of Kurseong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling . The question of inclusion of the Dooars, the plains of Siliguri and the Terai region does not arise at all, he said.

It was one of the very few public meetings in which Bhattacharjee sounded very forceful about not conceding the Gorkhaland demand.

Bhattacharjee, who is on a three-day visit to north Bengal, will also review the law and order situation.

Meanwhile, the Gorkha Vidyarthi Morcha — the student wing of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha — has given a call for a 24-hour Darjeeling bandh tomorrow to protest the district administration’s reluctance to allow the Morcha to hold a public meeting in Siliguri.

Earlier, Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen had told mediapersons that it was very difficult to permit Vidyarthi Morcha to hold a public meeting in Siliguri

The Morcha said if the chief minister can hold a meeting in Siliguri, why the same could not be allowed for them.

An official of the district administration said the meeting is not being allowed for apprehension of breach of peace.

However, the Morcha leaders have given relaxation to movement of traffic to Sikkim through national highway 31 A, linking Siliguri and Gangtok as per a Supreme Court directive that the road link should be kept open.

Gorkhaland by Om Dhungyel on 17 Feb 2010

Mr.Buddhadev is a communist and his idology is to dominate and execute minority communities. Just look at the situation of Cuba and its citizens, what is being done by CASTROS dictators. So Gorkhas must be careful in this movement. I request Bimalji not to make any promise to the people or give a concrete timeline to this movement due to which yours and people's faith in GORKHALAND fade away when your are unable to achieve your goal on time.. Always encourage people and respect them for their help. Pre-plan before you implement any program and also find an alternative for every program beforehand if your plan fails.Be prepared to challenge a fish eater's mind with your Gorkhay mind. Always take all negative comments of Bengal government and use them to make your plans. Also try to get as much help as you can from all other states of India. Lastly if you feel my comments are useful for GORKHALAND STATE, take them if not discard them. JAI GORKHA JAI GORKHALAND.

plebiscite a big solution by binay sharma on 15 Feb 2010

is Buddhadeb insane to reject people request that way ? does he know what people of hill wants ? Being a CM of trouble some Bengal he should be careful of what he is saying. if he is wise enough & want to take the opinion of hill well as plain people then why don't he propose for plebiscite ? it will solve the long lasting problem in a democratic way. here his statement is like a dictator which is not going to solve the problem but will create more. i am afraid if the bengal politicain treat gorkhas this way, then very soon this place will becaome worse than Kasmir & the bengal gove will be responsible for it . it was never belong to Bengal so to let it go amicalement will be wise thing for Bengal govt as well for center
