Lowen, who has dedicated her life to promoting excellence in Indian performing arts, is hailed as one of the leading international performing artistes of three forms of Indian dance — Odissi, Chhau and Manipuri.
Interacting with the media persons today, Lowen said she came to India in 1973 after acquiring her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Humanities, Fine Arts, Asian Studies and Dance from the University of Michigan as a Fulbright Scholar to continue her studies in Manipuri and learn Odissi and Chhau.
Lowen, along with her troupe, is performing a programme titled “Sculptures in Motion”, which is being organised by Ludhiana Sanskritik Samagam (LSS).
Lowen said her performance will start with the worship of Lord Ganapati followed by a dance on Kalidas' Kumar Sambhav, which depicts union of Lord Shiv and Parvati. She said the programme will conclude with an item called Moksha.
Lowen is credited for introducing Mayurbhanj Chhau in the US during the 1978 Asian Dance Festival in Hawaii and later at the Olympic Arts Festival of Masks in Los Angeles. She also presented Chhau on Doordarshan's National Broadcasts.
