Pune Around 200 lawyers of the labour and industrial courts -they are members of the Labour Law Practitioners’ Association (LLPA)-will resume work on Monday after a two-week break forced by the swine flu spread.

Also on Monday, several schools in the city and Pimpri-Chinchwad will reopen after a two-week break. The schools have decided to reopen after an announcement by district collector Chandrakant Dalvi. But not all of them will open on Monday. Some of them will wait and watch. Multiplexes and cinemas will also reopen on Monday.

The LLPA had decided not to attend the court in the PMPML commercial building at Swargate to prevent any swine flu spread as a lot of lawyers, clients and witnesses crowd the premises on workdays. The lawyers have not ruled out a similar break if the situation demands so.

“We’ll start going to the court on Monday but we shall consider a similar break if Pune experiences another spurt in swine flu cases,” said advocate Rajesh Shaligram, vice-president, LLPA.

At least 200 people, including those from distant places, visit the court daily. There are three courtrooms in the labour court and one in the industrial court. “Clients travel from far-off places even if they are unwell for fear of missing something during hearings. Moreover, hearings in each case happen only once a month, which is why clients do not miss the schedule,” Shaligram said.

While the work of filing fresh litigations was on during the break, the court had been adjourned for two weeks.

The LLPA has expressed its willingness to work during the week-long Christmas vacation and month-long summer vacation (in May) to compensate for the break.

Meanwhile, civil and criminal court lawyers would resume work at the District Court at Shivajinagar on Monday. As a precaution against swine flu, the Pune District Bar Association had announced that lawyers would go on leave en masse from Tuesday to Friday and be present in court on Monday. Through the week, the lawyers appeared only in important matters like bails, injunctions and stays.

Meanwhile, the Lok Adalat for labour and industrial courts held every three months has been postponed from August 16 to next month. The maiden elections to form the Pune Family Court Bar Association that were to take place on August 17 have also been postponed to next month. This is the first time in 20 years that the family court that has 200-odd practising lawyers catering to Pune district is trying to form a bar association. The family court lawyers, too, will start full-fledged work Monday onwards.
