The committee members visited the market at 11 am on Tuesday and, after taking a round for more than two hours, directed the traffic police and traders to ensure that no car is parked on Feroz Gandhi Marg. Vehicles will be allowed to park only on one side of Veer Savakar Marg, which is parallel to Feroz Gandhi Marg.
The committee is scheduled to visit the market again on Friday to review the situation — if there is no improvement in the parking situation, the committee has threatened to seal the market.
“We will implement the committee’s directions from tomorrow,” DCP Traffic (South) Rupender Kumar said on Tuesday.
The MCD, meanwhile, has been asked to look for an alternative solution to accommodate all vehicles coming into Lajpat Nagar. The parking at Veer Savarkar Marg will also be removed once the civic body arranges for a substitute location.
The committee has not allowed shopkeepers to park their cars on Veer Savarkar Marg. “Only customers who be allowed to park, though only for a short duration,” a traffic officer said.
For the time being, cars will have to be accommodated at 3Cs cinema hall’s parking, near the DDA park and the old bus stop at Lajpat Nagar.
For shopkeepers, the decision has come as a shock. “I don’t know whether I should bring my car tomorrow,” said P P Dawar, former president of the market’s trader’s association. “But more than that I am worried about my customers — why would they come to the market unless they get parking space?”
The Bhure Lal committee had recently also issued directives to remove unauthorised parking in Kotla Mubarakpur timber market to ensure smooth traffic movement on Bhishma Pitamah Marg.
