DJs Sameer and Rohit get lost in a musical Chakra:Vu

Their group is barely two-months-old and they already have grand plans to change the music scene of Chandigarh. Meet DJ Sameer and DJ Rohit of the fusion group, Chakra: Vu, and you'll know why they think so. “We were always inspired by fusion music, and are now bitten by the fusion bug," says Sameer, who is at present a DJ at Lyons, Sector 17. “Jalebi Cartle, Medieval Pundits, Talvin Singh....we've been listening to the fusion gurus hoping we'll also create such kind of music some day,” he unwinds. But what is fusion in their lingo, and Rohit shoots, “Well, in simple terms, when we combine Indian Classical music with electronic music, it’s called fusion. However, we believe that creating a new sound out of a milieu sounds is fusion too. We want to make people aware about this concept and so, have not kept ourselves confined to one type of music.” “We recently did two concerts with Zorawar Waddali of the Wadali family. Our first concert was at the Voodoo club, where we fused Punjabi songs like Ranjha, Main Kamli yaar di and Kinna sohna tenu rab ne banaya. This was followed by Meltdown, a concert organized by MTV on the New Year’s eve, at West Wood , Zirakpur, which was a smash hit and ran to packed houses!” tells Sameer.

According to Rohit, fusion is a vast area. "One can actually form any kind of music if one has the aptitude and ear for it," he says. To this, Sameer adds, “Fusion also gives you an opportunity to compose music impromptu. For example, we might not know how to play sitar or tabla, but we can always create tracks of both using the latest software.” The group will soon come out with a fusion album for Can Records in the the next couple of months.
