Kolkata Impasse spills on to Raj Bhavan during Governor’s farewell party

The wide chasm between Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was in full display at the tea party hosted by Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi whose term came to an end on Sunday.

Though both the leaders, claimants of the next CM’s post, arrived at the Raj Bhavan they never met each other. While the chief minister arrived at the Raj Bhavan lawn to attend the party that was teeming with around 600 guests, including some celebrities, Banerjee chose to meet Gandhi in private.

The Trinamool chief arrived when the party was over and headed straight to the Governor’s residence where she spent the next 20 minutes exchanging pleasantries with Gandhi. After the meeting, she told the waiting mediapersons: “I can’t have interaction with those who insulted the Governor from time to time. And I informed the Governor that I would meet him separately. He agreed to that.” It was at the Raj Bhavan a year ago that Bhattacharjee met Banerjee at the behest of Gandhi.

The two Trinamool leaders who came to the lawns were Somen Mitra and Union Minister of State for Urban Development Saugata Roy. While Roy came after the chief minister had left, Mitra never went near Bhattacharjee to say a ‘hello’ to him.

The lawns were dotted with members of the city’s glitterati which included industrialist B K Birla, CPM state secretary Biman Bose, ministers Asim Dasgupta and Abdus

Sattar, former chief minister S S Ray, danseuse Amala Shankar, film maker Aparna Sen, artist Shubaprasanna, the top brass of the state administration, V-Cs of most universities, members of the diplomatic corps among others.

The chief minister presented Gandhi with two books. “I am leaving for Chennai tomorrow. We will meet again,” the Governor told him. In the last one month, the chief minister had skipped two functions at the Raj Bhavan. While he chose to stay away from the oath-taking ceremony of new state Information Commissioner Sujit Sarkar, he also did not attend the inauguration ceremony of a solar project, which was attended by President Pratibha Patil. Bihar Governor Debananda Kunwar, who will be officiating as West Bengal Governor, will take oath tomorrow afternoon.

Gandhis to Bengalis by Biswadip Basak. on 15 Dec 2009

After spoiling West Bengal's future at last he is going! Gopal Krishna Gandhi has crossed the limit, what constitution has given to a Governor.I'll not blame Mamata, because her business is to oppose what left front does, good or bad for West Bengal.Today West Bengal's political situation is also contributed by Gopal Krishna Gandhi. Gopal Krishna Gandhi has spoiled the greatest opportunity of West Bengal to regain its position in Industry, just like his forefather Mahatma Gandhi has spoiled the future of greatest son of Bengal and undivided India Netaji Subash Chandra Bose who was the only deserving canditate to become the first prime minister of India.

Guv's farewell by U.K.Pal on 14 Dec 2009

Even on the occasion guve's fairwell Buddha and Mamata carefully avoided each other. If such is the relation between opposition and ruling party, what's in store for the state in days to come if Mamta becomes CM is any body's guess. After role reversal this stained relation will continue and state will also continue to suffer as usual.Unfortunate!
