Ahmedabad Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s three-day visit to Gujarat beginning February 12 has nothing to do with the forthcoming general elections, state party president Siddharth Patel said on Tuesday.

He said the visit is intended to oversee the membership drive of the youth Congress and get a first-hand idea of the situation in Gujarat by interacting with the youths.

On the first day of his tour, Rahul, also the All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and Amethi MP will visit the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi to pay his homage to the Father of the Nation. At Porbandar, he will interact with fishermen and listen to their problems. He will assess their living conditions and try to get a “first-hand account of where the state government has failed to uplift their conditions”.

From Porbandar he will visit the historic Somnath Temple, and then go to Amreli to interact with the youth at the Nutan School grounds. On the same day, Rahul will proceed to Bhavnagar, where he will interact with the state Congress leaders and try to get their views about the Youth Congress office-bearers poll due to be held in the first week of March.

On February 13, Rahul will interact with the students of M S University in Vadodara. Thereafter, he will visit the birthplace of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Anand district. He will also visit the tribal dominated Panchmahals district and witness an archery show at Dahod.

Patel said, on the last day of his visit, Rahul will visit the Sardar Sarovar dam over the Narmada at Kevadia colony in Narmada district. He will later leave for Surat where he will interact with the diamond workers, he added.
