Chandigarh Gandhian Studies as an optional subject will be included in the UPSC civil services examination from 2011 onwards. The youth should also adopt Gandhian philosophy as part of their life,” said R P Mishra, former vice-chancellor, Allahabad University, while speaking at the concluding ceremony of the three-day international conference on Gandhi today.

The unified efforts of D Gopal, coordinator, Gandhian Thought, IGNOU and Professor J N Sharma, president of the Indian Society of Gandhian Studies, finally bore fruit with the UPSC approving the subject as an option in the Civil Services Examination. They are also trying to get state public service commissions across the country to include the subject as an option in their competitive examinations.

Ashu Pasricha, K M Pandey, Alok Tandon, Ajeet Attri and Gitanjali also presented their papers on Gandhian philosophy.

All the delegates paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of Martyrs’ Day.
