The accused were identified as Shakil Jafarmistri Ansari (25), Israr Majjid Dhobi alias Topi (26), Rajiv Bhojraj Gadriya alias Pal (19), Azad Nisar Ansari (19) and Mainuddin Ansari (30), all natives of Uttar Pradesh and currently living in slum areas around Parvati. Israr alias Topi was reported to be the gang leader.
Senior police inspector V T Pawar said the gang had confessed of their involvement in looting a family on Mumbai-Bangalore highway near Kikvi village in Bhor on Febraury 2. Mohan Jail of Kalyan had lodged a complaint with Bhor police station.
"The gang had punctured Jain's car by throwing a strip of nails on the road. When the car driver was replacing the punctured tyre, the gang armed with sharp weapons attacked him and the Jain family and looted their ornaments, cash and other valuables," Pawar said.
On Thursday, the Faraskhana police received a tip off that dacoits were visiting the brothel in Budhwar Peth.
A police team comprising of senior inspector Pawar, inspector Manohar Chikhale, sub-inspectors Gajanan Pawar, S S Nadgeri, hawaldar Nana Ahire, S S Deshpande, A K Jamadar, naik Sambhaji Bhoite and constables Umesh Raut, Ramesh Garud, Suniul Wagh, Bapu Thorat, Dilip More, Abhay Kale, Maruti Walke and Bharat Sapkal nabbed them at Tajmahal building in Budhwar Peth around 3 pm.
Police recovered a revolver, two sharp weapons, a rope, a torch, an autorickshaw and 229.74 grams of gold and diamond ornaments worth Rs 3.97 lakh from the gang.
