Mumbai The arrest of a taxi thief led the Khar police to an entire gang of car thieves. On January 29 officers of the Khar police station arrested one Rakesh Yadav (20) for stealing the taxi that he was riding.

Yadav told the police that he was part of a gang involved in car thefts. He named one Sachin Gaekwad (24) and one Gayaz Pathan as his accomplices. The Khar police arrested Gaekwad from Himmat Nagar slums at Antop Hill. Gaekwad informed the police about a Honda City that he had stolen but was unable to take out of the city. Gaekwad and Yadav have been sent to jail. The police are on the lookout for Pathan and three others- Raju, Nirav and Nana- part of the gang. Another gang member, Javed, is presently serving a jail term in Bangalore.

“They are all habitual offenders. Yadav in fact doesn’t have a house and lives at the airport taxi stand,” said an officer of Khar police station.

“We found out that Gaekwad had just returned after serving a sentence in Hubli for car theft in November last year. Yadav, Nirav and Javed used to be involved in stealing taxis and selling them to scrap dealers. They would earn about Rs 10,000 per car. Pathan, Gaekwad and Raju would steal cars mainly SUVs and sell them in Pratapgarh, Bangalore, Kerala and other places in UP and Bihar. Pathan has car theft cases against him in Kandivli, Kurar, Goregaon (east) and Mira Road,” added the officer.

When asked about the gang’s modus operandi he said, “They would make duplicate keys by taking out locks from the car’s dickey or fuel tank. As manufacturers, make one key for all locks in the car, their job was made easy. In fact Yadav claims to be able to make fake keys within minutes.”
