Ganguly pips Ulibin for title

New Delhi After hitting a deadlock with Russian Grandmaster Mikhail Ulibin at the top spot, Surya Shankar Ganguly clinched the issue on better tie-break score at the 7th Parsvnath International Open Chess Tournament with 8.5 points here at Modern School on Monday.

In the final round, Ganguly settled for a quick draw against P Karthikeyan in just fifteen moves while Ulibin beat M S Thejkumar. The two-way deadlock was resolved by bucholz score and Ganguly edged Ulibin with just half a point. Grandmaster Petr Kostenko drew his final game against Indian Grandmaster Neeltopal Das and finished third with 8 points.

India got two Grandmasters in the form of P Karthikeyan and S P Sethuraman at the end who finished fourth and fifth, respectively. International master Prathamesh Mokal also achieved the same status while Shahikant Kutwal, Prantik Roy and Arindam Mukherjee advanced a rung to International Master norms. In the women’s section, Shalmali Gagare finished at the top while Altykenov Yerlan of Kazakhstan finished finished first among unrated players.

Final Standings: SS Ganguly , Mikhail Ulibin, Petr Kostenko, P Karthikeyan , SP Sethuraman, Y Kuzubov, N Das , RR Laxman, A Ismagambetov, A Kunte.

Results: SS Ganguly(8.5) drew with P Karthikeyan (8) ; M Ulibin (8.5) beat Thejkumar (7.5); N Das (8) drew with P Kostenko(8); S Saha (7) lost to Y Kuzubov(8); E Gleizerov (7.5) drew with P Thipsay (7.5); A Kunte (7.5) drew with S Roy Chowdhury (7.5); S Luldachev (7) lost to SP Sethuraman (8); RR Laxman (8) beat K Rathnakaran (7); P Negi (7.5) beat GB Prakash (7); A Areshchenko (7.5) beat DK Sharma (6); Y Solodvnichenko (7.5) beat B Arkhangels (6.5); H Sharma (6.5) lost to A Ismagambetov (8); S Nitin (7) drew with S Shukhrat (7); P Mokal (7.5) beat D Barua (6.5); SS Dhopade (7) drew with L Babu (7).
