The injured driver, Rajkumar Pandey, contacted Mahidharpura police and lodged a complaint of abduction.
“We don’t know who the girl is, where has she come from and where did she want to go. The girl alighted from some train at Surat Railway station and spoke in Hindi with Pandey,” said Police Inspector of Mahidharpura police station A R Desai. “We have informed Pandesara, Sachin, Udhna and Limbayat police stations that if they receive any complaint of missing about a young girl, they should immediately pass the message to them. We suspect a love angle in the incident,” he added.
Pandey, a resident of Nawagam Dindoli area, was waiting for passengers outside the Surat Railway station when the girl came to him and hired his rickshaw to go to Chikuwadi area in Pandesara.
Police said, Pandey spotted another auto-rickshaw running parallel to his from Linear Bus stand on Ring road area. Three youths travelling in the second auto-rickshaw intercepted Pandey’s rickshaw near Sahara Darwaja area and posed themselves as surveillance staff constables of Mahidharpura police station. The youths inquired about the girl.
The trio, then, told Pandey to take the vehicle to Mahidharpura police station for investigations. When Pandey demanded their identity cards, they beat him up and escaped in another rickshaw with the girl.
