Ahmedabad A 22-year-old woman from Kolkata was set on fire by a resident of Gota after she reportedly refused to work as a sex worker. The incident took place at the Gota Housing Board late on Wednesday. The victim succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in the wee hours on Thursday. In her dying declaration, Sapna told the police that one Ashok Bengali had forced her into prostitution. She said the incident was a fall-out of a tiff between them after she refused to entertain any more of Bengali's clients.

Sarkhej Inspector G D Trivedi said, on Wednesday night, an altercation ensued after Sapna refused to meet one of Bengali's clients.

“In a fit of anger, Sapna slapped Bengali, who doused her with kerosene and set her on fire,” Trivedi said. He said Bengali had met Sapna’s parents during a visit to Kolkata about two months ago. “Bengali had brought Sapna and her younger sister, Archna (20) to Ahmedabad, by luring their poor parents with better job prospects here,” he said.

He said while Archna was made to do routine household work, Sapna was forced into prostitution. The police have filed a complaint of murder and are on the look out for Bengali. Investigations have further revealed that Sapna and Archna belong to a Muslim family in Kolkata and used to stay here under false names.
