Kolkata The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) today called off the 96-hour bandh it has declared in Darjeeling, Dooars and Siliguri following an assurance from the top BJP leadership as well as Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and an appeal from former Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi. The bandh started this morning.

“We had a meeting today with a BJP delegation led by L K Advani. They requested us to withdraw the agitation and assured us they would actively root for Gorkhaland and put pressure on the central government. We have also received a request from the Union Home Minister and an appeal from Gandhi. They also requested us to join the tripartite talks to be held in Darjeeling,” Roshan Giri, who led the GJM delegation in Delhi, told The Indian Express over phone from Delhi.

“They also said the matter might not have to be placed in the state Assembly. Keeping in view all this, we have decided to withdraw the bandh and join the tripartite talks too. Our hunger strike, however, will continue,” Giri said.

In fact, Darjeeling MP and former BJP leader Jaswant Singh had openly backed the demand for Gorkhaland.

In Darjeeling, GJM president Bimal Gurung set December 31, 2010, as the deadline for the creation of Gorkhaland. “If we don’t get it by that time, we will launch a bigger battle,” he said.

In Kolkata, however, the state government began stepping up pressure on the GJM leadership. Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said, “We may have to rethink on our participation in the talks if the GJM continues with its fast.”

First question is about the legitimacy of the tripartite meet to be held in 21stDec 2009 in Darjeeling. Meeting with whom? With few infiltrators. They are just Nepali citizens. Due to the Indo-Nepal treaty of 1950 they can buy land and settle here in India, they can do business, they can take up job but this does not entitle them to be an Indian citizen. They do not have any voting right. But now forcefully they want to create a state of their own, and some main stream political parties in India are supporting this for a few votes only. This is shame. These people are constantly creating problem to the local people of this region for last few years and no political party has ever dared to oppose it. They have changed the number plates of the vehicles, they are not paying central of state taxes, they are not paying electric bills, they are not paying telephone bills, they blocked the road to Sikkim which leads to China which is a very imp road for our army. Now we all should oppose it.
