According to sources in the chief minister’s secretariat, the meeting with tribal leaders based in Dooars will be held by January-end.

Despite assurances from GJM that it will work towards restoring normalcy and communal harmony in Dooars, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC continued to be in force in the area, Special Inspector General (Jalpaiguri Range) Zulfiqar Hasan said on Thursday.

“The prohibitory orders are for ensuring peace. They will be relaxed as and when required. The situation remained peaceful and no untoward incidents were reported today,” he added.

Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, meanwhile, has expressed concern over the situation in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts. He had already called Chief Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakrabarti and Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen to Raj Bhavan for an update in this connection.

“We have briefed the Governor on the meeting held yesterday between the chief minister and the GJM. He also drew the government’s attention to a letter he has received, alleging misuse of DGHC funds meant for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in Darjeeling district. The Home department has been asked to look into it,” Chakrabarti said.
