Apart from the chief minister, state Commerce and Industries Secretary Sabyasachi Sen and state Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen were present at the meeting. The GJM also demanded permission from the government to hold rallies in the Dooars.
Emerging from the meeting, Sen said the government would not allow GJM to hold meetings in the Dooars. “The situation does not allow holding of such rallies and meetings in the foothills,” said Sen. He said the government will try to open the closed tea gardens in the area.
Meanwhile, normal life was affected by a bandh called by two anti-Gorkhaland groups in six districts of north Bengal on Thursday. The “Uttar Banga Bandh” called by Amra Bangali and Bangla Bhasa Bachaon Committee was called in protest against Gorkha Janamukti Morcha’s (GJM) demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland. However, the bandh failed to evoke any response in three hill sub-division of Darjeeling district, the stronghold of GJM.
