Kolkata Tension gripped Dooars region of north Bengal on Monday as the convoy of Roshan Giri, Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) leader, was attacked when he was travelling through Jalpaiguri.

Giri, some local Congress leaders and 50 other supporters were travelling in two vehicles through the region when they were attacked by activists allegedly belonging to the Adivasi Bikash Parishad (ABP). The incident happened in the Chamurchi area of Doors.

Inspector General (North Bengal) K L Tamta said the incident occurred when the convoy was traveling to meet the family of a supporter who was killed on Saturday. “The anti-GJM supporters surrounded the vehicles and demanded that Giri leave the area. They said that they would turn violent if he did not obey their commands,” he said. When the GJM leaders refused to do so, the protestors started pelting stones on the convoy.

The police arrived at the spot and managed to move Giri and his supporters to a safer area. They would go back once the situation returned to normal, the IG said. Although the vehicles were damaged, Giri and his men remained unhurt.

Meanwhile, the situation in Darjeeling remained stable on Monday as offices remained closed. Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling, Rahul Srivastav said: “Although there was no picketing yet offices chose to remain shut. Just for an hour in the afternoon there was chaka jam. But apart from that situation in Darjeeling remained stable.”
