For the time being, the GJM has agreed to refrain from holding pro-Gorkhaland meetings and rallies in Dooars at the chief minister’s request.

The seven-member GJM delegation — led by General Secretary Roshan Giri — has since briefed Gurung on the meeting with Bhattacharjee. The delegation has set a deadline of seven days for the state government to arrest those who, it claims, had attacked its rally in Nagrakata on January 16. Following this, clashes between GJM supporters and anti-Gorkhaland tribals has shut down the tea garden belt.

Gurung, who has been camping in Garubathan for over a week now to lead a pro-Gorkhaland rally into Dooars, is reportedly determined to hold a meeting in the region. Giri, however, told The Indian Express that GJM’s options are being reviewed in the light of the meeting in Kolkata. “We have stated our demands. The CM has requested us to not take out any rallies for the time being. We will not spell out our decisions at the moment. Let us see how the situation works out,” he said.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders imposed on January 15 continued in Dooars. Three companies of the Seema Suraksha Bal are patrolling the area, said Special IG (Jalpaiguri Range) Zulfiqar Hasan. “We have not taken any decision yet on when the prohibitory orders will be lifted. As of now, no untoward incidents have been reported,” he added. After returning from Kolkata, the GJM delegation had visited the North Bengal Medical College where several of its supporters are recuperating from injuries suffered in the clashes. The Morcha has given financial aid of Rs 10,000 to each family whose houses were damaged, Giri said.
