Mumbai In an effort to draw attention towards the increasing menace of global warming, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) India launched its ‘lights out’ initiative — Earth Hour global campaign — at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) campus —during the Azeotropy festival organsied by the chemical engineering department of IITB on Saturday. At the launch, Mayor Shubha Raul inaugurated a signature drive for the campaign, scheduled to be held for one hour on March 28 at 8:30 pm, to urge people to show their support for action on climate change.

Raul said it was the cities more than the rural areas that were to be blamed for the misuse of electricity and that she would urge corporators to partcipate in the campaign wholeheartedly.

Dr Goldin Quadros of WWF said, “When the organisers of the festival from IITB approached us with the idea of tying up with the campaign, we were a bit skeptical because chemical engineering and pollution go hand in hand. But then we also thought that the fest, whose theme this year is ‘We mean Green’, could be a good platform to inform young students about the need for green technologies and also to spread across awareness about the campaign to other regions of the country.”

Starting the campaign at the IITB is especially relevant because of the vast electricity consumption on the campus. An IITB student and one of the organisers of Azeotropy, Dinesh Goel explained, “Electricity conservation is a huge problem at IITB. The electricity bill amounts to around Rs 2 crores every year. By publicising the campaign, we want to make students on the campus aware of the issue and then also reach out to others.”

WWF-India is launching Earth Hour in India from Delhi and Mumbai. What began as a one-city environmental campaign in Sydney in 2007, spread across to over 50 million people in over 300 cities in 2008. This year, the campaign hopes to reach out to 1 billion people in 1000 cities. Quadros said WWF was also planning to organise a human chain at Marine Drive among other activities to promote the campaign.

Global warming and we by Abid Subhani on 18 Jul 2009

Today it an issue of discussion thruoghout the world. No continents or country is spare from this.Day by day increase in the environmental problems are the consequence of it.To a very extent our way of life so called modern life is responsible. The side effects of this are immense, it another matter that we are not aware about. From past couple of decades only talks and meetings are held, so it is high time that we a thinking citizen of the world have to do something. After all it is the matter of our very fundamental right i.e right to live. There is no color for our survival except GREEN..

earth hour and global warming by sangini nayar on 11 Apr 2009

earth hour has proved to be a hit.It has been instrumental in combatting the problem of excessive use of energy.in many cities the total energy consumption was diminished by 50% which means that there was a considerable decrease in the level of co2! this is a stepping stone.by further launchung such programmes will ddefinitey help the earth to recover!

Global Warming fraud by Mike on 26 Mar 2009

People, let's get real. The earth has been cooling for the last 5-10 years. Science has proven that over the last 50 years, we may be hotter by less than 1 degree farenheit. How do we know what temperature is right for the earth? The environmentalists never take into account changes in sun spot activity when they do their models because this really isn't about any warming, it's about control. They want control over more money. Because the facts don't justify the global warming crowds chants, they've conventiently changed the terminology from "global warming" to "climate change." Yes, there is climate change. It's called weather. It's happened since time began on this planet. So called renewable energy is a joke. Windmills and solar panels will not meet our needs and they pollute the planet and take up far more space than a coal fired generator or a nuclear energy plant. Even socialist France meets their need with nukes. Turn on the lights for this hour.

Secondly, stop investing in 'Big Oil' and 'Big Coal'.It comes as a shock to many ordinary citizens to be told that the huge greedy corporations actually make money for THEM, not for some faceless consortium. Sure, corporate flunkies may make millions of dollars, but WE, as investors, make billions, and even trillions. Their huge payouts and massive junkets are insignificant compared to the profits the companies make for their investors. You may well think that you do not invest in these companies, but if you have a pension or investment fund, you almost certainly do. These funds will, quite obviously, be invested in the very companies that make the most profits and returns for their investors. All these corporations are doing is actually acting effectively YOUR instruction, ie to get the best possible return. If WE stop investing in them, they fail, and will be forced to change their practices to survive in a capitalist environment.

Firstly, buy renewable energy. As far as I am aware, you have the choice to buy renewable electricity in all developed countries. If you cannot now, you should campaign for that inalienable right immediately. Currently our own household buys 25% of our electricity as renewable, costing us about US$33 extra per year. 100% would cost US$183)*.Some argue that if millions of householders (and industries, I would hope) buy renewable energy, there will not be enough. If you do not buy it, there will NEVER be enough. If you do, the money will be used to INVEST in infrastructure for future renewable energy, so making the expense just as effective.Merely by choosing to buy this, you are immediately and directly investing in the renewable energy industry, and sending a powerful and undeniable message to those who matter, the people who actually generate electricity, not environmentalists or politicians who may have different agenda.

Individuals CAN prevent Global Warming by Jerome Pearce on 10 Mar 2009

I am not completely convinced CO2 has anything to do with Global Warming. That notwithstanding, I am certain that reducing our reliance on fossil fuels is both a good idea and necessary, for a large number of obvious reasons. The good news is that we can all make a difference. It goes way beyond buying a few (polluting) low energy light bulbs, and will have a real impact if even half of those concerned about Global Warming follow the proposals. The beauty is that even if only half do this, it makes no difference what the rest do! Renewable energy will become cheaper than fossil fuels with enough investment in the technology, and everyone will move over naturally!

Please WWF, turn your lights off forever. You will save the planet.

appreciation by hina on 08 Mar 2009

appreciated are the efforts by WWF , and remarkable is the spread of this motion from one city environment campaign to 300 cities . but it's not a fruitful assumption to make for it to work in INDIA, just from two cities - mumbai and delhi.the common man recides in extremities as well. i guess the initiative should be spread across other institutes in other cities as well.a small start! would gear up with jerk! add more people to it! the more the hands, the more the legs - the more tha brains! and more would be moved the hearts.good luck! i wish the best to the motion!
